If you’re thinking about enrolling your child in junior tennis lessons in Toronto, you’ve come to the right place. At our tennis summer camp in Toronto, your child will learn the basic skills and techniques required to become excellent players. While there are many different things your child will learn at tennis camp, here are the different types of strokes they will be taught.

Serve

The serve is the move that starts each game by sending the ball into the court for play. To perform this move, the player throws the ball up into the air with one hand, and uses an overhead stroke with their dominant/playing hand to drive the ball over the net to the opposing player’s service box. The player gets two chances to drive the ball over the net this way.

Forehand Ground Stroke

This stroke is usually the first stroke a player will learn, and is considered the easiest move. The player will swing the racket across their body on the same side as their dominate hand to hit the ball over to the other side of the net.

Backhand Ground Stroke

The backhand ground stroke is a bit more challenging for players to develop accuracy. To hit the ball, the player will swing their racket away from their body on the opposite side, moving towards the dominant hand.

Volley

A volley is when a player approaches the net to hit the ball while it is soaring through the air. There are different ways to hit the ball during a volley, and the player has just a few seconds to decide how best to return the ball to the other side. Most players find this challenging, which is why our tennis camp focuses on training students with proper techniques and style.

Overhead Smash

An overhead smash or stroke looks a lot like a serve. The main differences are that there is no need to throw the ball into the air, and there is more footwork. The player must be able to anticipate where the ball is going to be to get into the right position to hit the ball.
